Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) started removing illegal billboards, signboards and banners on Sunday.
Officials removed around 900 billboards with Mayor Atiqul Islam inspecting the drive in Jasim Uddin intersection of the capital’s Uttara area, DNCC spokesperson ASM Mamun said.
Some 16 cases were filed and Tk 1.91 lakh was realized as fine, he added.
Briefing the media during the drive, Atiqul said the have been warning the people concerned for a month that tax must be paid to keep billboards hanging in the city.
“We have given notice but no one pays any heed to it. It’s not acceptable,” he added.
The mayor said, “Businesses must abide by the laws and it’s the responsibility of the mayor to make city livable for people. The signboards here and there become a complete mess.”
“Legal action will take if irregularity is found and similar drive will be conducted in other parts of the DNCC including Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Mogbazar, Kawran Bazar, Malibagh,” he warned.
Atiqul said, “We must collect taxes to keep the city clean, kill mosquitoes, and pay the staff.
“There is still time to pay tax on signboard and get approval,” he added.
Five magistrates of DNCC conducted auction of illegally construction materials and eviction drive against illegal signboards in different areas of Uttara on the day.
