Illegal billboards and hoardings can be seen by the hundreds in the capital, but not anymore. DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam along with other officials has started a drive to remove illegal billboards, signboards and banners. Already around 900 billboards have been removed in this endeavour. This is something that has been brought forth because of the constant negligence of the billboard owners who have refused to pay taxes or have ignored the notices that have been sent to them.

This surmises the legality of these signboards. The state that most of these are in can be considered quite hazardous for city dwellers. These are situated on rust covered frames which are poorly maintained and might topple over any time a strong breeze blows by, posing a fatal threat to the lives of people. There are statistics which show that at least 15 people have been killed and 50 others injured from billboard collapses in the capital from 2010.

Billboards impose upon

the beauty of

the city that city corporation

officials are painstakingly trying to enhance further

Despite all the outdoor advertisements, including billboards, hoardings, banners, mega-signs, posters, and graffiti writings, being illegal and had been banned, there are still countless such installations dotted around the capital. This imposes upon the beauty of the city that city corporation officials are painstakingly trying to enhance further.

Despite all these efforts, there are several more steel frames that are yet to be removed. This is not being possible as they are situated on rooftops preventing cranes from reaching them. Getting back to the issue of taxation, there are only nine  billboard companies which pay tax and others  defied that rules.

Moreover, there are also piles of construction supplies on the roadside, over which the DNCC mayor urged everyone to follow the rules and announced that if any such dumps are found it will be removed. This is quite providential as this will discourage people from breaking regulations.

The people concerned should abide by the rules and be fair in their businesses and pay taxes. On the other hand, roadside illegal dumps of construction materials must be removed as soon as possible as it create hindrances to traffic and public movement.
