With the risk of coronavirus spreading throughout the country looming over us, the government has decided to take such strict measures.

The coronavirus outbreak has spread across the world, infecting nearly two lakh people and leaving more than 8,000 people dead in a span of four months. Health Minister ZahidMaleque said the government will lock down the most vulnerable areas of the country, such as Madaripur and Faridpur, if the coronavirus outbreak worsens.

More than 5,000 people across the country were tested in the last 24 hours on suspicion of coronavirus infection and the government is trying to acquire a further one lakh kits for testing. The government has also identified several hospitals in Dhaka to treat coronavirus patients and is preparing 2,000 beds in preparation of a nationwide crisis.

The government’s prompt initiatives in response to the situation are indeed laudable. The authorities must remain on high alert for the time being in order to better prepare for a crisis. The medical sector must be strengthened and the government should bring in health care workers from outside of the country if necessary.

Security at all ports must be tightened further and entry to the country should be limited in this time of crisis. The government must also raise awareness throughout the country, especially rural areas where many people are oblivious to the dangers of the virus.
