Police have seized 10 taka per kg food embargo rice for the extremely poor while miscreants were trying to sell it in other shops. Five people involved in the incident have been arrested. Their names were not released.
A truckload of rice was seized in Kaliganj Bazar area of the upazila on Sunday and several persons were arrested. According to local sources, dealer Abdul Mukit had promised to take 570 sacks of rice weighing 30 kg per sack to Kaskonakpur. But the distributor had to face the wrath of the people for unloading rice at another shop on the way.
At one stage, the mob got excited and looted the rice cart. Upon receiving the news, Upazila Executive Officer, ASP Circle, Officer-in-Charge of Police Station and Upazila Food Officer reached the spot.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Zakiganj Police Station Mir Mohammad Abdun Naser confirmed the information and said that some people with a rice vehicle have been arrested. The incident will be informed through a press note. Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Bijan Kumar Singh said that the dealer brought 10 taka per kg rice from the miller under the food relief program.
He said, “Abdul Mukit, a dealer from Kaskonakpur in the upazila, Khalilur Rahman from Manikpur and Hossain Ahmed from Barthakuri did not unload the rice at the specified place. The mob got excited and started looting. After receiving the news, the rice cart was seized and brought to the police station. How many sacks of rice have been looted will be calculated.”
Bijan Kumar Singh said, “There was no problem when the dealer unloaded rice in his shop. But there have been questions about unloading at other stores. He could have loaded the car on the road and elsewhere without informing anyone. It's a crime. The matter will be looked into.”
