Above three hundred people of Jhaudia Abashan Prokala, a government housing complex for the landless people under Shailkupa municipality of Jhenidah on Wednesday morning showed agitation in front of the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) for an hour started at 10 AM.
The version of the UNO and municipality mayor had created confusion among the people as the UNO had said he had allocated nine tones of rice for the municipality mayor, while the mayor saying that he had received four tones of rice.
During their agitation in front of Shailkupa UNO office, the Abashan inmates said they did not receive any rice when they had been staying at home as per advice of the government following deadly disease corona virus for over a month.
Most of them are going without food for days together. They had chanted slogans as the UNO did not take any step for the hundreds of hungry people.As UNO Sailful Islam had assured of relief for them, they had withdrew the agitation from in front of his office at about 11 AM.
Abasan Prokalpa general secretary Mahidul Islam said they had appealed to the municipality mayor and local ward councilors time and again when the inmates went jobless due to corona virus. They had informed the matter to the UNO also.
But their cry went in vein. Neither the mayor, nor the UNO had given them any relief in last couple of weeks. They received some relief from Shailkupa sports association general secretary Shikder Wahiduzzaman Iku a few days back, Mahidul said.
When contacted UNO Saiful Islam said he had allocated nine tones of rice to Shailkupa municipality mayor. As per the demand of the Abashan Prokalpa inmates, he had also allocated another five tones of rice. While the municipality mayor Kazi Asharful Azam denied the version of the UNO said he received only four tones of rice. He questioned where remain ten tones of rice go?
The mayor said th UNO Had allocated him only four tones of rice so far. The Abashan Prokal;pa inmates receive VGF rice during Eid Ul Fitr and Eid Ul Azha only. He did not receive any rice from UNO for the Abashan inmates till Wednesday afternoon, Azam said.
The concern people had demanded probe into distribution of rice and other relief materials among the inmates of Jhaudia Abashan Prokalpa so far.
