The prevalence of prediabetes is rising in the country which is a big problem for public health. Experts say that our changing lifestyle, lack of awareness and physical exercise are the main causes for it. Majority of these people do not know that they have a prediabetes condition. The condition can progress to the full form of diabetes which will then become incurable.

Rising rates of obesity and lack of physical activity which are caused by unhealthy urbanization is one of the key factors. Poor nutrition is also to blame as majority of the population is not aware of proper nutritional science.

The problem is apparent not just in adults, but children as well. Parents who are themselves unaware of the basics of nutrition pass on their unhealthy eating habits to their children. Many children are regularly given sugary beverages and snacks without knowing about the impact they have on their growing bodies.

One way to improve the scenario is undoubtedly

to raise awareness of basic nutritional

science both among adults and children

Schools are also failing in this regard as they sell unhealthy food to children in the cafeterias. Therefore children are becoming dependent on unhealthy snacks and fast food at home and at school.

In our country, there is poor dietary diversity, with 70 percent of the diet comprising cereals, and inadequate protein and micronutrient intake. One way to improve the scenario is undoubtedly to raise awareness of basic nutritional science both among adults and children.

Adults need to be made aware of basic nutritional science through campaigns. Schools should also include nutrition classes as part of their curriculum and encourage healthy lifestyle choices to their students.

Improving nutrition is not only necessary, but long overdue. It can have positive effects on physical and cognitive development as well as productivity. Good nutrition is a basic human right that we must strive to ensure for each and every individual.
