A rare animal called Pangolin, which is locally known as ‘Bonrui’ in Bengali was released in Satchari National Park on Wednesday noon after being rescued from a locality in Golatila area of Nalua Tea Garden in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj. The Pangolin was released by Department of Forest. Earlier locals rescued it from the water well of Babul Mia of Golatila area and informed the Forest Department.
Vice President of Satchari National Park Co-Managing Committee, Journalist Abul Kalam Azad, Habiganj Range Officer Rehan Mahmud and others were present during the release. The Forest Department informed that previously Pangolin’s were classified as toothless mammals as they do not have teeth. However, due to some special features, they are currently included in a separate group named Pholidota. The only member of this group is the Pangolin.
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Professor Dr. Zahirul Haque Shakil said, “The existence of this animal is very limited in our country. Those that are there are also at risk. The concerned authorities should be more prompt in protecting these endangered species”.
