Students of Jagannath University on Monday staged demonstrations on the campus protesting the rape of a second-year Dhaka University student in the capital’s Kurmitola area last night.
Around 12:30 pm, students brought out a protest rally from Shanto Chottor of the university which paraded different faculty of the university and ended at Shahed Minar of the university following a protest meeting demanding the exemplary punishment of the rapist.
Among general students leaders of various organisations were seen to take part in the protest. In the protest meeting, they used various placards’ and posters with written-‘Want capital punishment to rapists, no punishment wanted rather award death penalty to rapists, etc.
Addressing the rally, JnU unit Chhatra Union president KM Mottakee said that day by day, women are becoming victim of violence such as rape, physical abuse, mental torture, murder and more which was unexpected in an independent state. The authorities of the state could not deny the responsibility of such crimes and it must ensure a safe atmosphere for women in the country. These incidents occurring because of the cultural injustice.
Meanwhile, a second-year female student of Dhaka University was allegedly raped and tortured in the capital’s Kurmitola area last night. Her fellow students and several DU employees brought her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight and got her admitted there.
