A rape convict who is serving life term will marry the victim at the jail gate of Rajshahi Central Jail following a High Court order.

It is learnt that Dilip Khalko, son of Sitanath Khalko from Godagari upazila, developed a physical relation with his cousin in February 2011, promising to marry her.

At one stage, the girl became pregnant then he refused to marry her. Later, she filed a rape case with Godagari police station on October 25, 2011. The court sentenced Dilip life in prison on June 12, 2012 and fined Tk 50,000.

He has been serving his jail term since 2012.

Recently, Dilip’s lawyer appealed to the High Court seeking bail on condition of marrying victim stating that the plaintiff has agreed to marry the accused.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mustafizur Rahman heard the petition and ordered Rajshahi’s Superintendent of Police to arrange the marriage at the jail gate.

The court also directed to submit a report on the progress of relation between the couple in next 30 days of the marriage.

Advocate SM Shahed Chowdhury moved the bail petition for the accused and Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi stood for the state in the HC.

Gias Uddin, Senior Jail Superintendent of Rajshahi Central Jal, said he is unaware of the verdict.

Necessary action will be taken after receiving the copy of the HC order, he added.
