Residents on Wednesday demanded pavement of one and a half kilometer road in Ramnagar village of Ward No. 12 of Jamalpur municipality. Tetulia-Ramnagar City Development Committee organized this protest rally. It was presided over by Aktaruzzaman Khan, president of the Urban Development Committee. Jahangir Salim, president of Jamalpur District Committee, Combined Social Movement, spoke as the chief guest.

Going to the surface, it is learnt that the centenary road of about one and a half kilometers from the Satrasta junction of Ramnagar village to the bank of Jhenai river is unpaved, even though it belongs to the municipality.  A little rain makes it muddy.  Traffic stopped on this important road.

In case of flood, students cannot go to educational institutions, cannot go to hospital with patients.  Normal life is severely disrupted. In addition, electricity users are living in a dangerous situation due to the lack of electricity poles.  Due to the bad condition of the road, there is no supervision by the administration.

This area has become a sanctuary for drug addicts.

Speaking at the rally, Jahangir Salim said that it is like darkness under the lamp.  Although it is an ancient municipality of more than 150 years, there are still many unpaved roads.  This road in Ramnagar is still like the Mandhatva age, but the municipal authorities do not pay any attention to it.  He demanded that this road be paved immediately.

City Development Committee President Aktaruzzaman said that at least 20,000 people travel along this road every day. The people of 10 villages of the municipality including Togarchar, Jhaugra, Charruhili of Melandah upazila are engaged in agricultural production, transportation of goods and because the distance to Jamalpur city is short, this road is one of the means.

He said that to meet the demand of vegetables in Jamalpur city, other agricultural produces in the mentioned areas are transported through this road.

Urban Development Committee has announced a human chain programme from the protest rally to be formed next Saturday.
