Coastal district Bhola has recorded the highest rainfall of the current monsoon season, with 380 millimeters of rain in the past six days. In the last 24 hours alone, the district received 93.3 millimeters of rainfall.
The continuous downpour has flooded low-lying areas outside the embankments, leaving residents of at least 20 villages waterlogged. The most affected areas include Hazariganj, Jahanpur, and Kolmi in Charfassion upazila, among others.
Locals said thousands of people are suffering due to waterlogging. The persistent rain has severely disrupted daily life in the region, especially for low-income and working-class individuals such as rickshaw pullers, day laborers, and small traders, many of whom have been left without work.
Inundation has also damaged fish ponds and enclosures in several areas, causing significant losses to coastal fishermen and farmers. Many people are struggling to leave their homes due to flooded roads and surroundings.
Meanwhile, for the fourth consecutive day, inland waterway transport has been suspended due to the rough weather.
Md Riyad Hossain, Assistant Director of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said that launch services on routes including Bhola-Lakshmipur, Charfesson-Monpura, Tajumuddin-Monpura, and Daulatkhan-Alexander will remain suspended until further notice. The suspension has caused serious inconvenience for passengers who rely on these routes for essential travel.
Additionally, the rise in river water levels coupled with heavy rainfall has flooded several low-lying areas, affecting hundreds of families across the coastal belt.
Monir Hossain, an observer at Bhola Meteorological Office, confirmed that the district has experienced its highest rainfall this season so far. He added that the monsoon is currently active and may cause more rain, but the situation is expected to improve within the next couple of days.
