196 trains including 48 inter-city are scheduled to ply daily on various routes of the Railway Eastern Region. 56 trains are closed due to various complications.
Railway authorities have given good news in this crisis. Authorities have decided to start two pairs of new trains from Chattogram. It will run one pair of new trains on Chattogram-Dhaka railway and one pair on Chattogram-Chandpur railway.
The concerned said that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the growing demand of passengers. If the new train is launched, the suffering of railway passengers for train tickets on Chattogram-Chandpur route will be reduced a lot.
Md. Jahangir Hossain, General Manager of Eastern Railway, said that there is a demand for new trains on this route. The new coach will come very soon. Then the authorities will take a final decision in this regard.
Chattogram Railway Station Master Zafar Alam said that there was always a demand for trains. More than 50 percent passengers are traveling standing even after addition of 5 additional coaches on each route. There are only 10 intercity trains on the Dhaka-Chattogram route with thousands of passengers per day.
Changes are also being made in the schedule of some inter-city trains on the Chattogram-Dhaka railway. Railways is preparing new working time table after three years for trains running on various routes. It has made several recommendations for changes in the timetable of existing trains and introduction of new trains. There is also a proposal to change the schedule of inter-city trains Sonar Bangla and Turna Express to run a pair of non-stop trains on the Dhaka-Chattogram route at 11:30 pm.
As per the new proposal, Chattogram to Sonar Bangla will depart at 4.30 pm. Will reach Dhaka at 9:40 PM. Now this non-stop train departs from Chattogram at 5 PM. Reached Dhaka at 10:10 PM. On the other hand, the inter-city train Turna Express will leave Chattogram at 11:55 PM instead of 11:00 PM and leave Dhaka at 11:55 PM instead of 11:30 PM.
In the proposed schedule, the weekly closure of Chattogram to Sonar Bangla is on Tuesday and the weekly closure of Suborna Express is on Wednesday.
On the other hand, the weekly closing day of Sonar Bangla from Dhaka has been kept on Tuesday and the weekly closing day of Suborna Express has been kept on Monday. The weekly closing day of the proposed new train of the Chattogram-Dhaka railway has been kept on Tuesday.
According to railway sources, 6 pairs of inter-city trains are now plying on the Chattogram-Dhaka route. Among them Mahanagar Express in 1985, Mahanagar Godhuli in 1986, Suborna Express in 1998, Turna Express in 2000 and Chattala Express in 2010. The last non-stop intercity train Sonar Bangla was added to this route 6 years ago in 2016.
After the Dhaka-Chattogram route, the busiest Chattogram-Chandpur route is an inter-city train named Meghna Express at 5 pm. Now another inter-city train has been proposed on this route.
