Raid conducted on kitchen market in Mirpur

An integrated mobile court conducted a raid in Mirpur-1 kitchen market and fish market of the capital. The expedition found evidence of the use of jelly harmful to health in shrimps. Without refrigeration, meat was being sold in blood-water-mixed ice.

Even though fish and meat and other products are sold in such inconsistencies and unsafe methods, these traders have only received a warning and a concession in the campaign.

On Monday at noon on the initiative of Bangladesh Safe Food Authority, consisting of representatives of Directorate of Agriculture Extension, Food Planning and Monitoring Unit (FPMU), Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Bangladesh Safe Food Authority, Directorate of Livestock, Directorate of Fisheries, Dhaka North City Corporation and Directorate of Agricultural Marketing, an integrated mobile court conducted the raid.

The operation was led by the Director of Bangladesh Safe Food Authority (Food Purity Inspection and Judicial Proceedings Department) Sahadeva Chandra Saha.

On the surface, it can be seen that the integrated mobile court raided the fish market at 12 noon.

The officials of the Department of Fisheries found the presence of jelly in the shrimps kept under the cover of the cardboard. Two cartons of shrimp fish were seized for this. In the absence of the owner of the fish shop, the present market management committee members were reprimanded.

At least 12 shops including Munchiganj General Store, New Sonia General Store were raided. There, various companies and wholesale products were seen arranged for sale without labels even after being repackaged. For this reason, the officials of the safe food authority listen to the rules and regulations of the owners. Warnings are issued that legal action will be taken if products are sold in violation of the rules in future.

After the raid, Dhaka District Fisheries Officer BM Mostafa Kamal said, "Our intelligence was that meat and fish are being sold in Mirpur in an untidy and unsafe manner.”

He said that jelly has been used in the fish, which is harmful to health. Consuming it can cause liver damage, cancer, stomach pain. Moreover the weight also increases, the consumer is harmed and cheated. They reported finding Shillong fish in the market, the sale of which is a legal punishable offence. The Department of Environment is urging to save fish across the country.
