When Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a raid at the capital’s Fu Wang Club did not find anything illegal three days ago, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel on Thursday seized a huge quantity of illegal cigarettes and alcohol from the same place. The RAB personnel also arrested three salespersons in this connection with around 2,000 bottles of alcohol, 10,000 cans of “Hunter” beer and Tk 7 lakh.
Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, a senior assistant director (Media and Legal Wing) of the RAB, said the trio was arrested on charges of selling alcohol beyond the permissible limit of the license. Those arrestees were identified as Jahid, Xavier, and Chanchal. Lt Col Sarowar Bin Kashem, the director of RAB’s legal and media wing, said nearly three percent of the alcohol bottles found at the club were stored illegally and the club could not show relevant papers of the extra alcohol.
RAB headquarters and RAB-1 jointly raided the Fu Wang Club as part of the ongoing drive against casinos and clubs. The mobile court judge in the raid, Dhaka district administration's Executive Magistrate Md Abdul Al Mamun, then said, "The club has a bar inside it having license for the bar business." Since September 18, RAB and police were conducting raids at different clubs, bars and restaurants across the country and sealed of all the casinos. Several leaders of Jubo League and Awami League were also detained in these connections.
