The anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) started investigation into the alleged link of Nurul Haque Nur, president of a faction of Gono Odhikar Parishad, with Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF).

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Director of the Legal and Media Wing of RAB, made the disclosure at a press briefing held in capital Dhaka on the arrest of one of the top militants.

The KNF is a geographical grouping of numerous Tibeto-Burman language-speaking ethnic communities that make up the majority in the Indian state of Mizoram and the Chin state of Myanmar. "The verified page of KNF has released several statements of Nur. We have received many indications of communication between Nur and KNF through social media”, the RAB official said and continued as saying, “Our intelligence is investigating into it to determine whether Nur is connected to KNF.”

At the press briefing, the RAB official also said that Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, a new Islamist militant organisation, and banned another Islamist outfit Ansar al-Islam recently signed a formal agreement with in order to cooperate with each other.

“Ameer Anisur Rahman alias Mahmud signed the agreement with the Ansar al-Islam at a meeting took place in Kishoreganj in 2022. Later, Ansar al-Islam provided Tk15 lakh to Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya,” he mentioned.

According to the agreement, the RAB official said, Ansar al-Islam took over the responsibilities of training Sharqiyah members on IT and security. In return, Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya pledged to provide training and weapons to Ansar al-Islam members in the hilly areas.

Earlier in the day, RAB arrested three suspected militants, including Anisur Rahman, the chief of the new armed militant group, from Louhajang in Munshiganj district.

Firearms, bomb-making materials, extremist pamphlets, and money in cash were also seized from their possessions during the early morning raid.

RAB official said, Anisur Rahman alias Mahmud had a consultation with KNF chief Nathan Bom and his second in command Bangchung before the understanding with Ansar al-Islam.

Ameer Anisur Rahman earlier had been involved with another banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami before, the RAB official said.
