Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Farjana Haque, also the operations officer of RAB-3, confirmed the matter to Bangladesh Post on Tuesday afternoon.

“Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-3 raided Shajahanpur area in the capital on Monday and arrested a human trafficker. We have primarily identified the human trafficker as Md Mahfuzur Rahman (51)”, ASP Farjana said.

He swindled a huge amount of money out of the victims in the name of sending the victims to Canada, Poland, Japan, Tunisia and Italy through sea routes and providing them fake visas, she added.

The elite force also seized 23 passports, five police clearance certificates and other documents related to human trafficking from his possessions.

During the primary interrogation, the arrested admitted that he was using New Delhi-Dubai and Algeria-Morocco routes for human trafficking while he was trafficking victims using rubber boat to cross the deadly sea.

His associate Shamim Ahmed, son of one Omar Ali Sheikh, hailing from Ghoradah Dakkhinpara under Chandaganj Upazila of Pabna district, who currently lives in Dubai, is also involved in human trafficking.

He took Tk. 6 lakh to 14 lakh from each of the victim for sending them to a developed country with a job offering handsome salary. He was also providing fake work permit and visa to the victims to earn their trust.

He embezzled a total of Tk 24 lakh from four victims who earlier complained to the RAB.

The arrested criminal is accused in two separate cases with Banani and Uttara East police station.
