The anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested four leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam from the capital Dhaka over the April 3 attack on a resort in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, RAB-11 Commanding Officer Lt Col Khandaker Saiful Alam confirmed it.

They were identified as Maulana Iqbal, Maulana Mohiuddin, Maulana Shahjahan Shibli and Maulana Moazzem.

RAB arrested them from the capital’s Juarain area, said RAB-11 commanding officer.

They were later handed over to the Sonargaon police.

Earlier, 10 Hefazat leaders and activists were arrested in seven cases filed over the violence in Narayanganj.

On the afternoon of April 3, Hefazat bigwig Mamunul Haque was detained at the resort with a woman, who he said was his "second wife". He was found at the Royal Resort’s Room No. 501, which he had rented.

The local UNO and senior police officers went to the resort on hearing about the incident. Police said at the time Mamunul was not being detained or arrested and that they were trying to find out what happened.

Hours later, stick-wielding Hefazat supporters launched an attack on the resort. They vandalized it and took away Mamunul from the police.

They also blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, vandalized and torched vehicles in protest of what they said was harassment of the Islamist leader. At the same time, Hefazat activists attacked and vandalized the local Awami League office there.
