‘Quality education is a big challenge now’

UGC signs MoU with British Council

The biggest challenge now for higher education institutions is to ensure the quality of education. UGC is working to introduce Outcome Based Education in all the universities of the country to improve the quality of higher education. The Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah made the comment at the Memorandum of Understanding and Operational Alliance signing ceremony on Monday. 

UGC Secretary Dr Ferdous Zaman and British Council Country Director Tom Miscioscia signed the Memorandum of Understanding and the Operational Alliance on behalf of their respective organizations.

The ceremony was chaired by the UGC Chairman. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Bangladesh has made significant progress in the last 50 years in terms of number of higher education institutions and students. Now the focus should be quality.”

The UGC Chairman further said that the universities of our country are lagging behind in terms of research-innovation and industry-academy cooperation. 

He shared that the UGC was continuing its efforts to build the country's universities as a breeding ground for research and innovation and to strengthen industry-academic cooperation. 

Through the agreement, the two sides agreed to work together on a number of issues to improve the quality of higher education in Bangladesh. 

Areas include strengthening existing teaching-learning activities, reviving community engagement programs, organizing regional policy dialogs in higher education and research, launching new projects in higher education and research, providing collaboration and teaching, anthropology and heterogeneity and working collaboratively on fellowship prog­rammes. UGC members Prof Dr Mohammad Alamgir and Prof Dr Biswajit Chanda, British Council Director of Education David Maynard and UGC SPQA Director Dr Mohammad Fakhrul Islam also spoke on the occasion.

The event was attended by Nusrat Jahan, Head of Education, British Council, Mohammad Delwar Hossain, Project Manager, English and Higher Education, and officials from the concerned departments of UGC.
