We appreciate the government’s tough measures to keep the prices of essentials at a tolerable level at any cost. The new government’s various initiatives have already helped reduce commodity prices to some extent in the capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.

As the newly appointed state minister for commerce Ahsanul Islam (Titu) warned against dishonest traders and unholy business syndicate, saying that the government is going to take strict actions against price hikes for essentials during the holy month of Ramadan, the prices of the daily commodities have started coming down in the kitchen market across the country.

Prices of most of the commodities were found to have  falling trend in the city’s different kitchen markets following the warning issued by the commerce ministry. So, we think no one can dare create an artificial crisis in the market through hoarding products illegally.

If the government continues taking strict actions against those who are trying to destabilise the market by unfairly increasing the prices of commodities for making higher profits, it will be possible to bring down prices of essentials to keep them within tolerable level of common consumers. The prices of most of the commodities including, potato, onion, flour (atta), fine flour (Maida), sugar, pulses, chicken, garlic and ginger have come down.

We believe the government will do whatever posseted to assuage people's sufferings and the Awami League government is truly doing that.

government’svarious

initiatives have already

 helped reduce

commodity prices.

The essentials’ price is now starting to become normal as huge commodities are now arriving in market. On the other hand, there was a lot of problems in commodity supply system due to various reasons which created impediment in supplying goods from main hub to the retail markets.

But now the supply problem has been over. The ruling Awami League is doing politics for the country’s people and it feels hurt when they go through pain.

As Sheikh Hasina realised people’s sufferings have mounted due to fresh surge in prices of essentials, she took the effective measures immediately so the commoners would not suffer from price hike. Earlier, everything had gone out of people’s purchasing capacity.

The lower, lower middle, middle and fixed income groups of people especially day-labourers, rickshaw-pullers, drivers or domestic-helps are the worst sufferers from essentials price hike. So, the authorities concerned must conduct mobile courts, monitor price lists and penalise those traders for selling essential commodities at higher prices than mentioned in price lists right now.

There is no alternative but to get tough on syndicates who are responsible for creating unrest in the kitchen market deliberately. Apart from prime minister’s steps, stern actions must be taken against those who are engaged in such profiteering activities immediately.

Besides, authorities concerned must conduct mobile courts, monitor price lists and penalising those traders for selling essential commodities at higher prices than mentioned in price lists right now. A good sense should be prevail upon the businessmen and they must pay heed to the prime minister’s call. We hope that they (traders) will sell all the essential commodities at fair prices across the country.
