The play ‘Pulsirat’ will be staged at 6:30pm on the occasion of the four-decade of Natyasrom titled ‘Natya Parbon 2020’ drama festival at the Selim Al-Din Open Stage at Jahangirnagar University.
The play is based on Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani’s novel ‘Men in the Sun’. Translated by Masumul Alam, Monirul Islam Rubel dramatized the play which has been directed by Kazi Toufiqul Islam Emon.
Azad Abul Kalam, Shahriar Sajib, Monirul Islam Rubel, Saiful Islam Journal, Chetna Rahman and others will act in various roles of the play. The stage has been designed by Shaheenur Rahman, Neil Kamrul planned the music and Babar Khadim planned the lighting scheme.
The play follows three Palestinian refugees named Abu Kayes, Asad and Marwan, seeking to travel from the refugee camps in Iraq, where they cannot find work, to Kuwait where they hope to find work as labourers in the oil boom. The three men each arrange with a clerk at a local store to be smuggled to Kuwait by a driver named Abul Khaijuran. The men are treated gruffly and are humiliated by the process. Once they finally arrange for travel, they are forced to ride in the back of the truck across the desert on their way to Kuwait. At several checkpoints, the men hide in a large, empty, water tank in the stifling mid-day heat as the driver arranges paperwork to get through. Thus, the story of ‘Pulsirat’ goes forward on.
