Coronavirus has spread to over a hundred countries and has been detected in Bangladesh as well. After the first few cases were reported, the authorities are taking several measures to contain further spread of the virus.
However, public transports in the country have not yet taken any effective measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Buses, trains and launches have not taken any large-scale cleanliness programme, leaving the public transports at risk of spreading of the virus to those travelling on the transports.
According to health experts, public transports carry the risk of spreading the disease in large quantities unless vigorous cleanliness campaigns are launched. Due to the socio-economic context of the country, a majority of the people use public transport on a daily basis. Bus owners have so far been instructed to clean buses at the end of every trip, spray germicide inside them and ensure a clean environment. They must also be instructed to clean the dusty seats, seat covers and glass of buses.
The government should give clear
instructions to public transport owners and
workers on keeping their vehicles free of germs
Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association has called a meeting with the owners of buses operating in Dhaka city. Such meetings must be arranged in all the districts and sub-districts as well. Railway authorities have also taken various steps, including distribution of leaflets at every train and station, to raise public awareness about the virus in their efforts to fight it. Launch owners and workers should also take steps to ensure cleanliness and strengthen their efforts to keep their vessels safe. Every other mode of vehicle, including rickshaws, CNGs and others should also regularly use germicide to ensure the safety of the public.
The government should give clear instructions to public transport owners and workers on keeping their vehicles free of germs. Awareness campaigns are needed to spread the word and make the general public
more careful.
