The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has introduced the public transport system ‘Nagar Express’ in the city. At the primary stage, the Nagar Express is introduced with 21 minibuses including one for female passengers. In addition to the city areas, these Nagar Express services are also plying through some neighboring areas of the city. SCC arranged a workshop with the drivers and the helpers before the introduction of the service. City dwellers, however, welcomed the initiative of the SCC but they also called upon the authorities concerned to remain alert so that the service is not suspended on the midway.
Earlier in 2008, a ‘Town Service’ for city dwellers was introduced with 35 minibuses of Nitol Motors. But, on the plea of incurring loss, the service ceased to operate three-year ago. The renewed Nagar Express is also being introduced in cooperation with Nitol Motors. In last April, Abdul Matlub Ahmed, Chairman of Nitol Motors strike a deal with Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Mayor of SCC to introduce the public transport service in Sylhet.
SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said all are set to introduce the Nagar Express. He was happy with the introduction of the service, the Mayor added. SCC has also finalised the route of Nagar Express. The buses will travel from Tukerbazaar to Hetimganj via Osmani Hopsital Road and Bandar Bazaar and Tuker Bazaar to Bateswar. Moreover, other buses will ply from Surma Market point to Hajiganj of Moghul bzaar via Hetimganj and Airport though Kadamtoli. The fair of the bus will be within Taka 20.
