Public awareness should be raised about environment: DU VC

Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman called upon alumni of the university to play an effective role in raising public awareness about the environment. He made the call while addressing as the chief guest at the third reunion of Dhaka University Friends Alliance (DUFA), a student organization of 1995-1996 session at Teachers and Students Center (TSC) of DU on Saturday. DUFA President AKM Enayet Hossain Pallab presided over the programme where Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Kamal Uddin Ahmed and Assistant Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Nur Ahmed Khandaker spoke as special guests. Acting General Secretary of DUFA Ashraful Islam Asha delivered the welcome speech.

Professor Akhtaruzzaman said various programmes have been adopted for the year on the occasion of 'Mujib Year 2020'. These programmes include green campus, cleaning up operations, organizing international seminars, symposiums and conferences, and bringing the university under automation. DU campus has already been declared polythene and plastic free, he said, adding that the former and current students of the university will have to work in unity to implement these activities. He urged all to work with integrity and to achieve sustainable development goals and to create a Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty.

Later, at a separate function at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium of the university where National Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam was honored with special award. DUFA organized the event where DU VC was present as the chief guest. The convenor of the organization Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman chaired the programme. General Secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Association Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan and Proctor Professor AKM Ghulam Rabbani spoke at the event. Other than this, scholarships were given to 4 underprivilaged students of the university.
