Protesters show 'black flag' to JU VC

A faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar against Corruption’ displayed black flag to JU VC Prof Dr. Farzana Islam declaring her as ‘corrupted VC 'on Sunday. The protesters arranged the black flag displaying program at the Shaheed Minar premises of the campus around 1 pm during the lunch break of the first year’s honors admission test, which started yesterday.

After the program, general secretary of Socialist Student Front, Mohammad Didar said, “After hearing the audio that has been leaked on social media, we are clear that she, her husband and her son are involved in money scam and other irregularities. We do not want this corrupt VC anymore. We demanded her removal as soon as possible.”

The agitated students of JU have been demonstrating on the campus since August 23, demanding judicial probe into the allegations of corruption and irregularities. They demanded her resignation on September 18 as a discussion on the progress of the judicial probe failed. A protesting teacher, Prof Raihan Rhyne of Philosophy department,“ Admission test is a sensitive issue, so we don’t want to interrupt the test. But we declared the VC persona-non-grata in exam halls during the admission test and decided to boycott her. If she wanted to enter into any exam hall we will show black flag to her as we boycott her as this varsity’s VC.”

“She must resign by October 1, otherwise we will go for tougher protest for her removal.” At the program around hundreds of teacher and student including Prof Dr. Tarek Reza, Prof Jamal Uddin Runu, Prof Khobir Uddin, Prof Kamrul Ahsan, Prof Anwarullah Bhuiyan, Prof Shamima Sultana Lucky, Ashikur Rahman president of the Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance were present among others. JU VC Prof Dr. Farzana Islam visited the faculty of business studies building’s exam hall, at the last shift for few time.
