A group of people, under the banner of "July Oikya", staged a march towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka's Gulshan on Wednesday afternoon with several demands, including the return of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who fled there during the July uprising last year.
Several hundred people gathered at the Rampura Bridge area before starting the march at around 3:15pm, our correspondent reports from the spot.
The demonstrators chanted slogans, including "Delhi na, Dhaka; Dhaka, Dhaka," as they proceeded.
Law enforcers were deployed in the area to maintain order.
Security measures have been tightened in Dhaka's diplomatic zone following the march towards the Indian High Commission.
Nur-e-Alam Siddique, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Diplomatic Security Division, said police personnel from the Gulshan Division and the Diplomatic Security Division have been deployed in the Rampura Bridge area as well as the Gulshan-1 intersection to prevent any untoward incident.
The march aims to protest what July Oikya describes as "conspiracies by Indian proxy political parties, media and government officials."
It also demands the return of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and fugitive Awami League leaders currently in India.
The programme was scheduled to begin at 3pm in the Rampura Bridge area.
