Protest over vandalism of Bangabandhu sculpture

Bangabandhu Officers' Forum of Jahangirnagar University staged demonstration on Tuesday protesting the vandalism of a sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia.

Over 100 members of the Pro-Awami League body formed a human chain on Dhaka-Aricha highway in front of the university’s main entrance protesting the vandalism.

Mohammad Ali, deputy register and convenor of the Forum, Md Abu Hasan, deputy register and co-convenor of the Forum, S M Sadat Hossain, deputy director of Physical Education department, Masudur Rahman, senate member of JU, A T M Abdul Hannan, former medical officer of JU, Jefrul Hasan Chowdhury Sojol, among others, spoke at the event. Speakers urged the government to ensure exemplary punishment for  the vandals and called the JU authorities to rename the university Prantik gate as Joy Bangla gate.

Addressing the protest, Mohammad Ali, deputy register and convenor of the Forum, said, “Many Muslim countries have sculptures of their leaders, founders and important public figures”

“Bangabandhu is the Father of the Nation.  His sculpture represents the history and tradition of the country. We condemn the vandalism of his sculpture in Kushtia and demanded immediate punishment for the vandals,” he added.

Md Abu Hasan, deputy register and co-convenor of the Forum, said Bangabandhu is not only a person but also our emotion, he is the state.

“We will uphold his dignity,” he added.
