A Correspondent: A section of the BNP supporters staged demonstration and blockaded Tangail-Mymensingh regional highway on Tuesday and Wednesday (November 4-5), protesting the announcement of BNP’s possible nomination for the Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency.

BNP executive committee member SM Obaidul Haque Nasir has been nominated for the seat.

Supporters of Lutfar Rahman Khan Azad, a four-time Member of Parliament and political advisor to the BNP chairperson, claim that the opinion of grassroots activists has not been taken into consideration before taking the decision.

They opine that the opinions of local leaders and activists have been ignored in the process of centrally selecting candidates ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary elections.

Lutfar Rahman Khan Azad’s activists and supporters held a program by blocking the Tangail-Mymensingh regional highway on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They claimed that SM Obaidul Haque Nasir was nominated without any support from the grassroots activists. The people of Ghatail want the nomination of the person who is more popular and will work for the grassroots.

They have warned that the movement will continue until the BNP nomination for the Ghatail constituency is changed.

Present at the protest program were former district BNP vice-president and former mayor Manjurul Haque Manju, former joint general secretary of upazila BNP Abu Bakar Siddique, former general secretary of municipal BNP Faruk Hossain Dhala, former president of the municipal Jubo Dal Shahidul Islam Shahid, former president of the upazila Jubo Dal Rafiqul Islam Dulal, former convener of the upazila Jubo Dal Khurram Masud Siddiqui, former president of the upazila Chhatra Dal Mostaq Ahmed Sagar, former General Secretary of Upazila Chhatra Dal Md. Afzal Hossain, former Vice President of Upazila Chhatra Dal Md. Al Amin Khan, former President of Municipal Chhatra Dal Murad Hasan Rubel and leaders and activists of the constituent organizations.

According to party sources, many leaders who have been actively working at various levels of the BNP for a long time were seeking nomination in the Ghatail constituency, but the person nominated from Ghatail, is a resident of another upazila.

Therefore, he is considered an outsider in the constituency by everyone.
