A natural safety net has been inaugurated in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar to keep the Baikka Beel fish-friendly.

Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mir Nahid Ahsan inaugurated the programme at Baikka Beel in Kalapur Union of the upazila on Wednesday evening.

Local residents including Sreemangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazrul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Neshar Uddin, District Fisheries Officer Muhammad Mizanur Rahman and Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Farazul Kabir were present on the occasion.

Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mir Nahid Ahsan said the mother fish sanctuary at Baikka Beel is an important source for the reproduction of native fishes. It is important to protect the area. At different times, there are allegations that a group of unscrupulous fish hunters enters Baikka Beel and hunts fish. Therefore, reed and pen forests are being created around Baikka Beel so that no one can enter by boat from outside.

If this forest is created, Baikka Beel will come under security cordon.

Sreemangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazrul Islam said that several houses have already been built around Baikka Beel. For each of them, houses with land have been built in the Mazdihi hills of the same union. After their eviction, the entire Baikka Beel area will be kept open. Legal action will be taken against those who do not obey this law of the government.
