Liver specialist Prof Mamun Al Mahtab (Shwapnil) has been awarded with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by the University of Malaya, a public research university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
It is the oldest and highest ranking Malaysian institution of higher education, according to two international ranking agencies.
Prof Shwapnil is the chief of the newly established department of interventional hepatology at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The University of Malaya conferred the PhD degree upon him for his outstanding contribution in developing advanced drug for Hepatitis B – Nasvac.
He led the clinical trial of the drug being used for Hepatitis B treatment.
Prof Shwapnil passed MBBS from Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in 1995. He passed MSC in gastroenterology from the London University in 1998 and MD in hepatology from the BSMMU in 2006.
He is also a fellow of Indian College of Physicians, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Royal College of Physicians of London.
