Prof Rumana new BSEC commissioner

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), the regulator of the stock market, has got Professor Rumana Islam as a new commissioner.

She joined the commission on Sunday, confirmed Mohammad Rezaul Karim, BSEC executive director and spokesperson. Prof Rumana will be the 

commissioner of the Legal Department of BSEC.

The five-member commission comprising the chairman and four commissioners of the BSEC had a vacancy for more than a year.

In March last year, Khandaker Kamaluzzaman, commissioner of the BSEC law department, retired from the post. The post had been vacant since then.

Prof Rumana graduated from Dhaka University in 2003 and completed her postgraduate studies in 2004.

She holds a master’s degree in international trade law from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom in 2006 and a PhD in international investment law from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom in 2015.

She joined Dhaka University in 2008 as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Law.

Prof Rumana is the first female commissioner of BSEC since its formation in June 1993.

As a result of her joining, four members of the five-member commission came from Dhaka University. 

All of them were in the teaching profession before joining the BSEC. The other commissioner is a former government secretary.
