Bangladesh has lost one of its most preeminent educators. National Professor Anisuzzaman has made an eternal journey across the river of life and death towards the land of no return.

He passed away leaving his last breath at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon (may he rest in peace). At the time of his passing he was 83 years old. Following his death, the hospital authorities conducted tests for COVID-19 and the results came out as positive.

Professor Anisuzzaman was a man who had seen it all and done it all. His ties with the liberation of Bangladesh can be traced back to its early days when enthusiastic and spirited young students took to the streets to fight for their mother language. He was a language soldier who fought for Bangla in 1952. He participated in the mass uprising of 1969 and made sacrifices for his mother land in 1971.

He was at the forefront of every secular

activity towards the formation of

our nation’s identity

His commitment to freedom and liberation was unmatched. He believed in the spirit of liberation of Bangladesh and fought for it. He was never encumbered by preconceived ideas and notions of tradition; rather he was a very liberal and progressive individual who believed in equality for all and voiced against the tyrannical dictatorship in 1990.

Professor Anisuzzaman was a genuine scholar and true patriot who made numerous contributions to our language and literature. He was an important figure in the drafting of the Bangla version of the constitution.

There can be many spectacular scholars and activists but none as remarkable as Professor Anisuzzaman who excelled in teaching, knowledge and social activities. He was at the forefront of every secular activity towards the formation of our nation’s identity.

A host of prominent people in Bangladesh condoled and mourned his death. Forever is gone the face that has bestowed so much on this nation. Let us live and reminisce the ideals and teaching that have been left behind by this great personality.
