Professor Muhammed Alamgir has resigned from his position as a full-time member of the University Grants Commission (UGC). He submitted his resignation letter to the senior secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education on Sunday.
Prof Alamgir, who was serving his second term as a full-time UGC member, cited personal reasons for stepping down. He mentioned in his letter that he could not continue in the role due to personal grounds.
After resigning from the UGC, Prof Alamgir will return to his previous role as a professor in the civil engineering department at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). He is expected to re-join KUET on September 9.
During his time at the UGC, Prof Alamgir significantly contributed to Bangladesh's higher education sector. He was actively involved in various initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of education and the administration of universities across the country. His departure marks a major shift, as he was a key figure in many important projects and policy decisions.
The resignation of Prof Alamgir comes at a critical time when the UGC faces multiple challenges related to higher education quality and university governance. His exit might lead to conversations about the UGC’s direction and the appointment of a new member to fill the position.
Prof Alamgir’s return to KUET will likely be met with enthusiasm from colleagues and students, who value his commitment to teaching and research in civil engineering. His experience at the UGC will bring fresh insights to his academic work at KUET.
