Locals have staged a protest demanding the arrest of Rafiqul Islam Malai, chairman of Muriauk Union, on charges of using his relatives’ and supporters’ names in the draft list of government aid payments and using four mobile numbers in innumerable names. At that time the protesters detained the chairman.

Later the situation came under control with the intervention of the police. The incident happened on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner directed Nurul Islam, deputy director of the local government department, to investigate the allegations and submit a report. He began an on-the-spot investigation yesterday.

In Lakhai Upazila, there have been allegations of irregularities in the preparation of the draft list of government aid cash distribution. However, as the list has not been finalized, the upazila administration has said that it will rectify the situation if any discrepancies are found. The list is still in the draft stage, the deputy commissioner said.

If there is inconsistency, it will be caught before it is finalized. He said that legal action would be taken against anyone who committed inconsistency for the purpose of corruption. I have assigned DD LGED to investigate the matter. He began the investigation on Saturday.

Allegedly, 4 mobile numbers were used in Muriauk Union next to the names of 306 people. And these numbers belong to the relatives of Union Parishad Chairman Rafiqul Islam Malai. It has also been alleged that many fake names have been used in the list.
