The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) started investigation into the allegation of irregularities in constructing houses for the homeless under the Ashrayan Project-2 in Jhinaidha’s Shailkupa.
The graft watch formed a three-member body following a widespread media coverage on and protests against allegation of irregularities by Shailkupa UNO Saiful Islam in the project, said Nazmus Sadat, deputy director of ACC’s Jashor’s combined district office.
The committee led by ACC inspector Akteruzzaman talked to the Shaikupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saiful Islam facing the allegation as well as the beneficiaries of the project in uapzila’s Kabirpur.
The team visited the site of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Asharayan Project in Kabirpur, Fazelpur, Shahbajpur and Manaharpur villages.
Many houses were leaning even a mild pushing of hand when they were constructed without any base under the ground and use of low-quality cement, bricks and sand.
The allegation drawn attention of the country people as well as others in the globe where UNO Saiful Islam was blamed for the poor construction work. The government allocated Tk 44.4 lakh to construct 37 houses for the poor at a cost of Tk 1.2 lakh each.
UNO Saiful Islam and his office attendant Mintu face allegation of constructing the houses using low quality bricks, cement and sand without any foundation under the earth.
Hence, a number of houses collapsed during the construction work, injuring workers.
When contacted UNO Saiful denied opening of ACC investigation into irregularities in Asharayan Project. The ACC team might visit Shailkupa for other purposes, he insisted.
