A prisoner was beaten to death when he was sleeping by another prisoner in Kishoreganj Jail-1. Another prisoner was injured in the incident. The incident took place in the early morning on Tuesday (February 9) in the 11th cell of the jail.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Hai, 27, son of Israel Mia of Shimulhati village at Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila.
On the other hand, the attacker is Md Saidu Mia of Maijhati village of Tarail upazila in the district.
Kishoreganj Additional District Magistrate Md Abdullah Al Masud confirmed the matter.
Two separate committees have been formed under the leadership of IG Prison and District Magistrate. The district administration has formed the three-member committee, convened by Additional District Magistrate Md Abdullah Al Masud, to investigate the incident.
The other two members of the committee are Additional Police Super and Deputy Civil Surgeon. The committee has been directed to submit an investigation report soon, said Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shamim Alam.
The jail sources said that Abdul Hai and Md Saidu Mia and two others were involved in a quarrel in the early hours on Tuesday. Just when Abdul Hai was asleep in the morning, Saidu Mia broke the wood of the bathroom door and hit Abdul Hai on the head with that wood. At that time, Jahangir was also injured by Saidur.
After rescuing them, they were sent to Kishoreganj 250-bed General Hospital where the on duty doctors declared Abdul Hai dead. Injured Jahangir has been given first aid at the hospital.
There are five prisoners, who were arrested in different cases, live in cell number 11. They are all somewhat mentally unbalanced.
Jail Superintendent Md. Bazlur Rashid said security at the district jail had been beefed up after the incident. District Magistrate Mohammad Shamim Alam and Police Super Mashrukur Rahman Khaled visited the jail.
