Priority to mega projects

The three mega projects of the government including the Padma Bridge in the country, are being given priority in the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for Fiscal 2022-23 so that they do not fall into financial crisis, as well as for the important big projects to work properly. 

In the proposed budget for the 2022-23 fiscal, it has been said that about Tk 250000 crore will be spent in the development sector. Combined with government funding and foreign loans, the size of the next one-year development budget or annual development programme (ADP) will be Tk 246066 crore. 

In the huge development budget, the highest allocation has been made in the areas of communication infrastructure, power and education. A significant portion of the ADP will be spent on the government’s mega projects, about Tk 62,000 crore. The Padma Bridge project, which is awaiting inauguration this month, also has a large allocation.

 The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) project received the most money in the allocation. The country’s first and only nuclear power plant construction project has received an allocation of about Tk 13396 crore. The other project with the highest allocation is the 4th Primary Education Development Program (PEDP-4) which got the second highest allocation of around Tk 8,759 crore. The Matarbari Coal Power Project received the third highest allocation of about Tk 6,554 crore. A deep seaport will also be constructed at Matarbari under this project.  

Others of the highest allocated projects are Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Expansion (Phase I), about Tk 6019 crore, Padma bridge rail link project got about Tk 5809 crore, Covid-19 Emergency Response and Pandemic Preparedness (WB-GoB) got about Tk 4254 crore, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib railway bridge construction about 3851 crore, Construction of Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway Tk 3703 crore, Expansion and Strengthening of Power System Network under DPDC area Tk 3,059 crore, and Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line-6) Tk 2883 crore and the Padma Bridge, Tk 2202 crore.  The Bangabandhu tunnel project under the Karnafuli River which is in the last stage is getting Tk 2,000 crore. The two projects related to the Payra Deep Seaport are getting Tk 800 crore. The Cox’s Bazar rail project via Dohazari-Ramu is getting Tk 120 crore.
