Bangladesh has become a role model in women’s empowerment, and the country is now experiencing an appreciable change in society because of its efforts in this regard. Women today are unstoppable. Whether it is handicraft, engineering, business, medicine, media, sports, technology or rocket science, women have set their foothold in every field of work or profession.

Yet, a section of people in our society has a perception that women are less empowered than men. Its true indeed that in many spheres of life we encounter gender discrimination, and in this country violence against women that come mostly from the insolvent sections of society is widely prevalent. Still domestic violence, dowry related repression, rape, sexual harassment, wage discrimination, and social discrimination against women are common phenomena in Bangladesh.

We must remove all kinds of discrimination

 and obstacles that prevent women

from realizing their full potential.

Being vocal about gender discrimination and violence against women is a part of our social responsibility. Scrutinizing the need for women’s contribution for the future development of the country, it can be said that the participation of women needs to be enhanced and reinforced in decision making processes.

Women’s contribution to Bangladesh’s progress in different areas is indispensable. In order to sustain the tempo of current progress of Bangladesh, women’s participation is inevitable. In order to make this nation strong and self-reliant, dynamic works and schemes are needed to be integrated in government schemes to empower women. In this regard, we must remove all kinds of discrimination and obstacles that prevent women from realizing their full potential.

Women in Bangladesh are leading from the front in the country’s sustainable development. Representation of girls in high school level is similar to that of boys. But at the higher education level, this scenario is quite discouraging. Therefore, a lot more needs to be done if we want to see our women climbing the socio-economic ladders side by side with their male counterparts.
