The police in bordering Moheshpur of Jhenaidah could not arrest the main accused in double-murder killing case of two other said smugglers uncle Mantu Mandal and his nephew Shamim Hossain after eight days of the killing incident.
Both Mantu Mandal and his nephew Shamim Hossain were gunned down on Wednesday afternoon at of village Baghadanga in the border belt by their rival Tarikul Group, mastermind of gold smuggling.
Locals said there was a longtime conflict and rivalry between two groups of smugglers Tarikul Islam and Shamimul Islam.
The rivalry got momentum when Tarikul was blamed for arresting another gold smuggler Rimon Hossain, son of Hazrat Ali of village Matia in same bordering upazila belongs to Tarikul’s group by the BGB men on January 17 early morning with 40 gold bars amounting Taka over four crore.
Taking the revenge, Mantu Mandal and his nephew Shamim Hossain along with his men started pelting stones on the house of Tarikul and started vandalize.
When Tarikul failed to refrain the uncle and nephew from the attack on his house, he opened fire that killed the duo. Rafikul Islam, a brother of Shamimul had filed a case with five persons of the village including prime accused Tarikul Islam on Thursday.
Since then, the law enforcers had arrested the third accused Abdul Jalil, while the remaining accused including prime accused Taaaarikul Islam till Wednesday afternoon.
Locals said at least 10 Bangladeshi men, especially the cattle traders were gunned down by the border security forces (BSF) of India in last 20 years when they had illegally entered in to Indian territory to bring cattle heads.
The recent incidents of smuggling of golden ornament or gold bars are seized by the law enforcers, especially the BGB from the bordering area alarming. 58 battalion BGB personnel had seized 304 gold bars weighting 38.4 kilogram between January and December last year.
The price of the seized ornaments and bars was at least Taka 27 crore.
They (BGB) had filed 12 cases during the time, BGB sources said.
Moheshpur police station officer in charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman when contacted said they were able to grill one of the five accused in the uncle-nephew killing case, while, conducting drives to grill the remaining at an early time.
