Prices of rice, edible oil continue to rise

Onion, potato, vegetables show falling trend

The prices of rice and edible oil continued to show a rising trend while onion and potato show declining trend in most of the kitchen markets across the country.

Just after a gap of a week prices of rice again has gone up along with sugar and edible oil while prices of vegetables, new potatoes and onions have declined.

While visiting different kitchen markets in the capital, including the biggest - Karwan Bazar on Friday, this correspondent found such price variations of essential daily commodities. 

On the other hand, prices of other products including eggs, beef and mutton remained unchanged. The price of all varieties of rice has gone up by Tk 3 to Tk 5 per kg, sugar price has been increased by Tk 5 per kg and is being sold at Tk 65. Atash rice is being sold at Tk 55 per kg, paijam at Tk 48 to Tk 50, miniket at Tk 65, Nazirshail at Tk 75. Loose edible oil is being sold at Tk 125 per liter with an increase of Tk 5.

Newly picked potatoes are being sold at Tk 25 per kg while newly picked onions at being sold Tk 40 per kg. The price of green chilli is selling at Tk 80 per kg. Besides, ginger is sold Tk 60 per kg and garlic is Tk 120 per kg.

Karwan Bazar trader Yusuf told this reporter that, "Prices of rice have risen again in the space of two weeks. The price of rice has gone up by three to five taka per kg. This price increase is due to the syndicates in the rice market."

On the other hand, referring to edible oil he said, "Oil prices have risen per barrel in the international market. That is why the retail prices has increased by Tk 5 per liter. Mainly due to the second wave of coronavirus, the international market has lost workers, as well as reduced oil production. Edible oil prices have started rising in the international market".

However, he feared that price of edible oil may go up again.

While visiting the vegetable markets, it was found that, radish is sold at Tk 15 to Tk 20 per kg, bean is selling at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg, tomatoes is selling at Tk 50 per kg, turnip is selling at Tk 10 per kg, string bean is Tk 40, brinjal is Tk 20 to Tk 30, cucumber is Tk 40, parwal is Tk 50, papaya is Tk 30, bitter gourd is Tk 30, okra is Tk 30, green chili is Tk 80 per kg, and  carrots are being sold at Tk 50 per kg, per piece of cauliflower and cabbage is now Tk 20 to Tk 30, per piece gourd selling at Tk 40.     

The price of broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 120 to 130, layer chicken at Tk 230 to Tk 240 and sonali variety chicken at Tk 190 per kg. Beef is selling at Tk 550 and mutton at Tk 800 per kg.    

Visiting different fish markets, it was found that, Per kg hilsa fish was selling at Tk 800 to Tk 100 per kg (Based on size and quality), Awn fish at Tk 500 to Tk 600, Rohi is at Tk 250 to Tk 350 per kg, Katla at Tk 170 to Tk 280, Tilapia sold at Tk 140 to Tk 160, Boal fish at Tk 400 to Tk 450, Pangas is sold at Tk 120 to Tk 150, Pabda sold at Tk 280 to Tk 350, and Shing sold at Tk 400 to Tk 500 (based on  quality and size).
