The price of meat has gone up due to the beginning of Eid shopping in the kitchen market. Prices of different kind of meats like beef, mutton, and chicken reached an all-time high in Ramadan last week. The price of chicken has risen near to the price of beef and the business owners are reluctant to sell any farm roosters at lower than 280tk.
The holy Eid-ul-Fitr may take place in the country on Wednesday or Thursday based on moon sighting. The store owners are taking the advantage of being able to ask higher prices. Not only meat, the business owners are asking higher prices for fish too in the pre-Eid market. Visit to kitchen markets, including Kawran bazaar, Agargaon Bazar, Shewrapara Bazar showed that meat varieties including beef was selling for Tk 600, mutton for Tk 750, and buffalo meat for Tk 480. Although meat prices went down from the previous week, beef is selling at Tk 580-600 all across the capital.
Sellers attributed this price hike to rise in the cost. But the beef prices were fixed at 525tk per kg during May by the Dhaka City Corporation (DSCC) before the start of Ramadan. Most meat vendors were still selling beef for 550tk-600tk per kg. Broiler chicken was being sold for Tk 155 per kg, local chicken was selling for Tk 450-Tk 500 per kg and special variety chicken for Tk 250–320 per piece. The prices are expected to increase in the next few days.
The price of fish is also higher than last week. Shrimp was being sold for Tk 900-1000, Pabda for Tk 600–700, Hilsha for Tk 1000 and catfish for Tk 500–600.
Prices of different varieties of rice remained unchanged over the week. Packet Rice was being sold for Tk 115-120.
