Since the beginning of coronavirus there have been worries amongst the people regarding the supply of food in the country. This had resulted in panic buying of food and other essential supplies during the early days of coronavirus outbreak in the country.

But, it is heartening to know that there is ample supply of food and essential commodities in the country. Moreover, there is also additional harvest of rice underway to add to the supply chain.

Although the price of a few essentials did hike during the beginning of the holy Ramadan, the present stability of price of groceries is very much welcomed.

A report published in this daily projected that kitchen markets in the capital and other major cities witnessed a decline of prices of staples including rice, eggs and edible oils in the past one week, indicating smoother supplies of essentials and monitoring despite nationwide shutdown amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously there was a lack of proper policing of the kitchen markets during the coronavirus crisis in the capital which caused a price hike of essential goods.

Despite the government repeatedly saying over the news media that there are sufficient stocks of food in the country, unscrupulous traders indulged in selling daily essentials at higher prices than usual.

As a result, the low-income people became the worst sufferers. Experts have opined that there is no scope of price hike of staples as the rice price has shown downtrend when only 5 to 10 percent rice crop has been harvested so far this season.

Facing the coronavirus spread in the country it is imperative for the dealers of essential goods to contain the price of commodities as much as possible. In this regard proper policing must be ensured and enforced.

Officials of Directorate General of National Consumer Rights Protection said they are conducting a campaign to keep the commodity prices within the tolerable limit. This is very much welcomed as it will ensure a grasp on the prices of essentials in the grocery shops.
