Various elements including defeated anti-liberation forces and killers of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman are out to make the President Md Abdul Hamid’s dialogue with registered political parties for formation of an independent, neutral and acceptable Election Commission (EC) controversial.
On December 20, the President held talks with Jatiya Party (JaPa), the main opposition political party in the 11th Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) at Bangabhaban. Since then, the head of the state has been holding talks gradually with other political parties ahead of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad polls.
Country’s people have to be aware of these
vested quarters involved in spreading
propaganda at home and abroad
Earlier, similar dialogue was held with the participation of political parties ahead of the ninth, tenth and eleventh parliamentary polls. But it has been noticed that different vested quarters are trying to make the ‘talks’ controversial and create confusion among the people spreading falsehoods and propaganda. Under the cover of political parties, they are also terming the ongoing dialogue on the reconstitution of the EC a farce.
Besides, the elements are also trying to mar the country’s congenial political atmosphere in a pre-planned way as they do not believe in the power of mass people. Being aided by their foreign collaborators they are now searching for a clandestine alley to go to the power.
Country’s people know that at first military dictator Ziaur Rahman had captured the state power at gun point, destroying all spirits of the Liberation War and independence and put the self-declared anti-liberation forces in power after the assassination of Bangabandhu on August 15 in 1975. Later, HM Ershad, another military dictator had also captured state power overthrowing Abdus Sattar’s government and followed the Zia’s footsteps.
And after 21 years, Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina came to power in June in 1996, uprooting the misdeeds and misrule from country. After coming to power, the ruling Awami League has always tried to hold elections peacefully
The dialogue has been arranged to take the political parties opinion in order to reconstituting the EC through a search committee. And the President has the full authority to appoint Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and not more than four Election Commissioners.
The current EC’s five-year term will end on February 14 next year. During this period, the President will form a new commission, under which the 12th parliamentary elections will be held.
Country’s people have to be aware of these vested quarters involved in spreading propaganda at home and abroad in order to create unrest in the country. Therefore, cooperation of all political parties and civil society members is a must to constitute the new EC as a credible institution.
