President M Abdul Hamid on Sunday stressed on expanding multidimensional communication between Bangladesh and India, taking necessary steps to utilize every field of cooperation between the two neighbours, reports BSS.
“India and Bangladesh are the closest neighbours and trusted friends“, the President said as outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Riva Ganguly Das, called on him at Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, President Hamid termed the bilateral ties between Bangladesh and India as excellent and said the relations have been expanding gradually, press secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.
The high commissioner discussed with the President issues related to bilateral interests and other matters including the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the press secretary added.
The President said trade and investment between Bangladesh and India have increased tremendously and as a result, the road, rail, sea and air connectivity have increased.
Even in the COVID-19 (Corononavirus situation), he said, the initiative taken to transport goods by sea on an experimental basis from Calcutta is highly commendable.
The head of the state said the people and the government of Bangladesh gratefully recall the crucial role played by the people and the government of India in gaining the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.
The outgoing high commissioner said India always gives priority to its relations with Bangladesh.
A new horizon has opened up with Bangladesh in water and road ways and it would play a very positive role in expanding trade and investment in days to come, she added.
Secretaries concerned to the Bangabhaban and senior officials of Indian high commission here were present on the occasion.
