Prepaid meters have already been introduced in some key areas of the capital, Chattogram and other places for electricity. This has been able to curb the consumption of electricity from the national grid. And now it is being hoped that the same sort of consumption reduction can be obtained for gas through prepaid meters.

According to a report published in this daily, if all domestic gas users get prepaid meters, 53 billion cubic feet of gas worth Tk 1,900 crore will be saved every year. It is heartening to see such numbers and we welcome all attempts to save money which the government can in turn utilize for the development of the nation. Not only this but also the theft of public resources will also be curbed.

This has brought great benefits in case of electricity,

and we hope that such a scene can also be obtained

in case of gas consumption

The plan to save money depends on the habitual frugality that will come up amongst people to save money once prepaid meters are installed. This has brought great benefits in case of electricity, and we hope that such a scene can also be obtained in case of gas consumption.

The report also elaborates on ethical standards, as how illegal income of unscrupulous employees of gas companies will be stopped if theft of gas is prevented. We hope the authorities concerned will work with haste to meet the target number of prepaid meters user as soon as possible.

Titas Gas Distribution and Transmission Company Limited had planned to install two lakh gas pre-paid meters in Dhaka with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Bangladesh government to bring order and equality in domestic gas supply. However, it took five years to implement the project worth Tk 499 crore.

We hope that such inadequacy can be overcome with united efforts for achieving desired prosperity and development goals.
