Prangone mor’s play ‘Michael Madhusudan’

Dhaka-based theatre troupe Prangone mor will observe legendary Bengali poet-playwright Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s 196th birth anniversary on 25th January by staging a play on his life. The play titled ‘Michael Madhusudan’ will be staged this Saturday at 7pm at Dr Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium, Mahila Samiti.

The play, written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by Ananta Hira, portrays the last hours and moments of Michael’s life at Alipore Charity Hospital in Kolkata. The staging and costume design is by Nuna Afroz and music is by Ramiz Raju. Light is done by Ahmed Sojan. 

The play features three characters including Madhusudhan Dutta, his French wife Emilia Henrietta and Michael’s patron Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar. Ananta Hira, Ramiz Raju and Suvechha Rahman are acting in the play. 

Director Ananta Hira said, ‘Michael Madhusudan Dutt is such a creative and extraordinary person and he has written the first Bengali drama, translated drama, first comedy and tragedy drama and first epic in blank verse. He is the pioneer of the first drama and first sonnet. Whoever works in Bangla theatre has a great responsibility to showcase his work.’
