PPP Authority CEO visits Dhaka Bypass Expressway project

Upgradation of Dhaka Bypass Road into a four-lane access-control expressway under the first-ever Public Private Partnership project of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) is making progress. 

Sultana Afroz, Secretary to the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Chief Executive Officer of the PPP Authority (PPPA), inspected the progress of the 48 km long Dhaka Bypass Expressway project on Sunday.

The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion inside Dhaka city and establish road connectivity with safe and modern facilities which will play a significant role in increasing the overall trade and commerce of the country. Relevant work including construction work is being carried out by the Consortium Dhaka Bypass Expressway Development Company Limited after overcoming the initial hurdles of Covid. The project company has informed that the work will be completed by 2024.

During the visit, PPPA Director General (Programming & Investment Promotion), Abul Bashar Director (Finance) Anwar Hossain, Project Director, and Private Partners were present among other high officials.

On 22nd June 2021, the revised support of Tk. 84.64 crore for this project was approved by ECNEC. This amount will be spent mainly on land acquisition, rehabilitation and consultancy.

The construction timeline of the expressway project is 3 years. The project is now in the Condition Precedent stage. The consortium announced that the financial closure will be completed by August. The project, built entirely with private funding, will be managed and operated by a private partner with a 25-year contract.
