Poultry industry needs long-term planning

Speakers at BIPCC colloquium with media

Speakers at a colloquium on Thursday opined that the poultry industry should have long-term planning to feed the nation. Egg, meat should be affordable for all.

Referring to the huge employment, created in the sector and empowering rural women, they urged the government to come forward to support this industry. 

The Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC), with support from the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC) organized the colloquium with the media gate keepers at a city hotel.   Media gatekeepers has agreed with the poultry  industry leaders that the role of media in promoting animal protein is vital for building a healthy nation and intellect society. 

They said that the media-industry relation should be strengthened and information should be made available. 

Dr. Khaleda Islam, Professor, Nutrition and Food Science, University of Dhaka, presented a keynote paper. 

Prof. Khaleda said that animal protein is better than plant protein. There are various myths and misconceptions about poultry egg and broiler meat which is an obstacle to increase animal protein intake. 

People suffer from different diseases due to protein deficiencies. In our country child mortality up to one year age is higher due to same reason. Adolescent boys & girls and pregnant mothers should consume more protein, especially animal protein to avoid sad incidences, Prof. Khaleda added. 

Pronab Saha, Editor of DBC news said that there were propaganda against poultry industry. The doctors also sometimes gave misleading information about egg.  

Pronab claimed that there is difference between government data of egg, chicken and meat production with the actual production. 

Saiful Alam, Editor of the Daily Jugantor said that he consumed two eggs daily when he was affected by Covid-19. Alam said that awareness has been creating in city areas but the rural areas remaining in dark. 

Ibrahim Azad, Head of News, Dipto TV requested the industry leaders to conduct research on tasty chicken meat. 

Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Editor in chief of TV Today said that it would take a long time to change food habit of our people. 

Therefore, to reduce dependency on rice and increase protein intake, the industry should have exclusive planned campaign. 

Abdul Quayum Mukul, associate editor of the Prothom Alo; Talat Mamun, Executive Director of Channel-24; Ashish Saikat, CNE and Shamim A. Zahedy, Associate Editor  of Independent Television; Nazmul Ahsan, Executive Editor of the Business Post, Gazi Nasiruddin, Joint editor of Desh Rupantor; Sajjad Alam Khan Topu, Business Editor of Jamuna Television also attended the colloquium among others.

Moderated by Prof. Golam Rahman, editor of Ajker Patrika and former Chief Information Commissioner,. Moshiur Rahman, president of BPICC, presided over the colloquium. 

The media gatekeepers said that the industry should have long-term planning to feed the nation. They said, egg, meat should be affordable for all. 

Moshiur Rahman, president, BPICC said that the production of egg and chicken has reduced due of corona pandemic; production cost has hiked up due to increase of raw materials in the international market. 

Ihtesham B. Shahjahan, president of Feed Industries Association (FIAB), said that the poultry, dairy and fisheries industries have been moving forward, meeting the local demand and in some cases also earning foreign currency by export. 

Md. Ahsanuzzaman, Secretary, FIAB said that we should not export soybean meal as we are getting 75-80 per cent of it from local industry.
