There are 74 vacant posts of headmaster in government primary schools in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district. The upazila has a total of 199 government primary schools.
Academic and administrative activities at those government primary schools are being severely hampered because the posts of headmaster are lying vacant. Therefore, acting headmasters of these institutions are running the academic and administrative activities.
The situation is not only hampering studies but also creating other problems too. Apart from the Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district, there are 37,926 vacant posts of headmaster in government primary schools in the country at present, according to media report.
In this regard, a requisition was sent to the Bangladesh Public Service Commission on January 4 from the Ministry of Public Administration for the filling vacant post of headmasters. The total number of primary school teachers in the country is 427,000. Among them, 390,000 are in service.
If the crisis cannot
be resolved soon,
the primary education
sector will inevitably
face a severe setback.
Primary levels students in rural area face manifold challenges in continuing their education and shortage of headmasters and teachers is one of those that hampers regular their academic activities. On the other hand, the assistant teachers who were performing the roles of head teacher are not getting the facilities the headmasters usually get and there is no one to look into it, forcing the teachers to continue their additional work with frustration.
Besides, many schools are continuing their educational activities with only two teachers. Despite willingness to provide a standard education, the authorities of the schools are not being able to do so for the crisis. The district primary education officers had sent a letter to the Education Ministry seeking immediate appointment to the vacant posts. But the rate of recruitment is far less than the requirement.
If the crisis cannot be resolved soon, the primary education sector will inevitably face a severe setback. The crisis is affecting normal school functioning and the rate at which recruitment is done every year is very poor compared to the posts vacant.
Therefore, the authorities concerned must fill the vacant posts of headmaster and assistant teachers immediately.
