Campaign for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) picks energy as the voting date knocks on the door. In their relentless efforts to garner people’s support and mandate, candidates are visiting door to door requesting for votes.
The aspirants of DNCC and DSCC elections and their agents are passing busy days in the festive electioneering campaigns on Tuesday.
Awami League mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam launched election campaign from the Pool Par area at Mohammadpur while BNP candidate Tabith Awal at started his campaign from Fuji Trade Centre from Ashkona Hajj Camp in the city on the same day. The mayoral and councilor candidates and their supporters put their frantic efforts to reach out to voters in those areas of the city to woo them for ensuring their victory.
They were found busy in distributing leaflets and festoons as well as personal appearances to voters for making their final appeals as polls are scheduled to be held on February 1. Most candidates staged big showdowns by bringing out colourful processions and rallies on Wednesday.
Awami League mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam on Wednesday promised that if he is elected he would remove the waterlogging problem from the city. “We want to make our capital Dhaka a healthy city. We are promising that we will control the growing mosquito problems through launching various action programmes. If I’m elected I will attach the highest importance on eliminating breeding sites of Aedes mosquito,” he said.
Referring to ugly appearances of the posters, Islam said, “I’m calling upon the Election Commission to take initiative for not allowing use of posters during the polls. I’m also requesting the commission to arrange how and in what way election campaign can be launched through using digital device,” he said.
On the other hand, BNP backed mayoral candidate Tabith Awal while campaigning at Ashkona said that the election commission sought 48 hours and formed a probe body to look into attack incident during last day’s electioneering. “We have informed the EC and now we are waiting to see what steps it will take. To this regard, the EC should have been more active”, he said.
It is to be noted, the mayoral candidate and some of this party members were injured in an attack during their campaign at Bajarpara, Gabtoli on Tuesday morning. He accused the ruling Awami League supporters for the attack. Meanwhile, BNP candidate for Dhaka South Ishrak urged the law enforcement agencies to work for the people’s betterment. He said, “Some other party people viciously attacked BNP north candidate, which is undesirable.”
He was talking at an electoral rally at Hazaribagh on Wednesday. He said, “We all observed sudden attack, but till now, none of them are arrested. I will urge the police to act responsibly.” “The city is now at the dead end, we need a change to come out from such horrific situation. We are going to get that change through the election on February 1,” he added.
Citing warnings against the ruling party, he further said, “There is no freedom of speech, people do not have voting rights. This should be identify and we will not tolerate any inconvenience. We want to make a livable city as well as a country for all”.
