Electoral campaign by the candidates for the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election slated for 7, 2024 begins today (Monday).
Meanwhile, the time for the withdrawal of candidature for the polls ended on Monday with the withdrawal of over 350 candidacies by the aspirants across the country.
The accurate figure, however, could not be confirmed as off filing of the report at 9:00pm on Sunday.
But, sources said at least 34 aspirants from different political parties have withdrawn their candidacies in Dhaka, 38 in Khulna, 19 in Mymensingh, five in Panchagarh, seven in Nilphamari, 11 in Bogura, five in Natore, three in Natore, two in Netrokona, seven in Gazipur, 10 in Tangail, seven in Manikganj, six in Chandpur, 11 in Barishal, three in Patuakhali, one in Narail, one in Rangamati, seven in Jashore, nine in Chattogram, three in Jamalpur, six in Satkhira, three in Laxmipur, two in Feni, five in Gaibandha, 10 in Noakhali, nine in Cumilla, four in Faridpur, six in Kushtia, three in Jhenidah, five in Narayanganj, two in Shreemangal, two in Jaypurhat, four in Rajshahi, three in Moulavibazar, four in Sunamganj, three in Cox’sBazar, 11 in Brahmmanbaria, five in Lalmonirhat, 10 in Rangpur, two in Bagerhat, six in Sylhet, six in Kurigram and five in Habiganj, five in Meherpur.
The EC announced the JS polls schedule on November 15. The last date for submission of nomination papers was November 30. A total of 2,716 candidates submitted their nomination forms from at least 30
registered political parties and individuals. After the primary scrutiny, the Returning Officers declared 1,985 candidates valid and 731 as invalid.
Later, 561 out of 731 invalid candidates appealed before the EC from December 5 to December 9. During the hearing period for six days, 275 aspirants got back their candidacies.
The last date for the withdrawal of candidacy was on Sunday (December 17).
Electoral symbols will be distributed among the parties and candidates today and the electoral campaign by the candidates will also begin today.
To hold the election in free and fair manner, the EC has decided to engage a total of 7.5 lakh members from different law-enforcement and security agencies. Of them, 1,82,091 will be deployed from the Bangladesh Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), 46,876 from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 5,16,000 from the Ansar and VDP, and 2,350 from the Coast Guard.
Besides, members from the Armed Forces Division are also being deployed across the country.
Moreover, Judicial Enquiry committees and mobile courts are also active in the field.
